Food Photography: Make Meals Look Amazing
10 tips that turn your lunch into Instagram-worthy content.
1. Shoot in Natural Light
Window light is the #1 food photography secret. Turn off overhead lights. Side window light creates appetizing shadows and texture.
2. Use a 45° Angle
The most flattering angle for plated food. Not directly overhead (flat), not eye-level (can't see the plate). 45° shows both the dish and the background.
3. Overhead for Flat Dishes
Pizza, salads, grazing boards — shoot directly from above. Make sure the whole plate is in the frame with some empty space around it.
4. Simple Background
White plate, dark table. Or dark plate, light table. The food should be the star — not the background.
5. Style the Plate
Scatter herbs, drizzle sauce, add a napkin or fork. Props make the scene feel lived-in and real.
6. Don't Use Flash
Flash kills food texture. It makes everything look flat and institutional. Natural light only.
7. Get Close
Fill the frame with the food. Show texture — the crust, the glaze, the steam. Macro details make food irresistible.
8. Use the Warm Filter
Food looks best warm. Apply our Warm or Golden Hour preset to enhance the appetizing tones.
9. Boost Saturation Slightly
+10-15% saturation makes colors pop without looking unnatural. Don't overdo it.
10. Add a Timestamp
"Sunday brunch 🥞" or a date stamp adds context and storytelling. Use our timestamp overlay for automatic dating.
